The electric Helen Mirren amazes as Russian Countess Sofya in this lavish period epic about the last days of her husband, War and Peace author Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer), circa 1914. While Sofya battles over his will, she playfully manipulates Tolstoy's dewy new secretary, Valentin (James McAvoy). Despite being an interesting literary footnote, this film feels like it was more fun to make than to watch.
