Welcome back to Mystic Falls? The CW president Mark Pedowitz spoke to reporters at the Television Critics Association's press tour in Los Angeles on Thursday, August 11, where he revealed that Nina Dobrev is currently in talks to return as Elena Gilbert for The Vampire Diaries' final season. He did not mention how many episodes she might appear in.

"There are discussions going on with Nina," the network exec said. "We'd love to have Nina back. She was great for the CW — she was integral to The Vampire Diaries. These are discussions that go on."

"Hopefully she'll be back, but should it not work out, [showrunner] Julie [Plec] has planned a great series finale that will satisfy fans," Pedowitz continued.

It was announced during the show's San Diego Comic-Con panel last month that the series will call it quits at the end of the upcoming eighth season. At that event, the team showed a video of highlights that included scenes with Elena, leading to speculation about her possible return. The character was written out of the supernatural drama series at the end of season 6 after she fell into a decades-long sleep.

At the TCA winter press tour in January, Plec said she would welcome Dobrev back to the fray with open arms. "I miss her deeply and would take her back in an instant if she called and said, 'Hey, can I come back and play?'" the series' executive producer said.

The Vampire Diaries, which launched in September 2009, stars Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) and Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore). It returns to the CW for its farewell season on Friday, October 21, at 8 p.m. ET.
