Wheel of Fortune’s $1 Million Winner Is a Middle School Math Teacher: Video

Wheel of Fortune got schooled by a math teacher! Sarah Manchester became the third person in the history of Wheel of Fortune to win a million dollars on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

Manchester, 42, who teaches math at Takoma Park Middle School in Northern Virginia, answered the bonus round question correctly, enthralling the crowd and host Pat Sajak with her winning answer of “Loud Laughter.”

“I was stunned,” Manchester told the Washington Post of her win. “Even though I knew that it was a possibility, it didn’t seem like something that could really happen.”

The mother of two, whose kids, husband, and dad were at the taping in L.A. in May, had to keep her million dollar victory a secret for months. Still, not much will change for Manchester, who is still teaching sixth and seventh grade. She has yet to see her students, though, as she’s currently in New York for appearances. “I don’t envy the sub,” Manchester joked.

The victor also revealed how she plans to spend the million dollars she just pocketed, remaining practical and philanthropic about its use. Manchester said she’ll put the money toward her kids’ college tuition savings, and take the entire family to France in 2015 for when her teenage daughter’s choir goes on tour.

“Now they might have more options that we would have shied away from before,” she said of her kids’ futures. The family will also choose certain charities to receive an allotment of the money.
