Dax Shepard made a rare comment reflecting on his past romance with Kate Hudson.
During the Wednesday, October 28, episode of his “Armchair Expert” podcast, Shepard, 51, recalled how he met Kate, 47, through her brother, Oliver Hudson, which started out as a friendship before taking a romantic turn.
Shepard recalled to his guests, Sara and Erin Foster, how he had hit on Kate when she was still married to Chris Robinson, adding, “I gave her 111 percent of any charm I have. I just thought she was so f***ing beautiful, and I love [her movie] Almost Famous, and, oh my God, I can’t believe she’s here.”
He continued: “I remember leaving [the event] going like, ‘Well, this is as good a job as one can do.’ She’s married, who cares, but that was a great first showing. I just had a crush on her.”
After Kate and Robinson, 59, separated in 2006, Shepard tried to woo her again at a mutual friend’s dinner party.
“From that night on, we were just together every single day,” he said about their brief 2007 romance. “[We were] making out, f***ing all day long.”
Shepard ultimately went on to marry Kristen Bell, with whom he shares two daughters, in 2013. Kate, for her part, later dated Matt Bellamy from 2010 to 2014 and is now engaged to Danny Fujikawa. She has sons with Robinson and Bellamy, 48, and a daughter with Fujikawa, 40.
Kate and Shepard previously discussed their romance during a 2019 episode of his podcast.
“First of all, very, very fun. [A] very memorable, very wonderful, fun experience,” Shepard recalled.
While the actress admitted that they were “super compatible” and “laughed [their] asses off” together, their romance ended because they were “in different places in our life.”
“I felt very ‘less than’ around you quite often,” Shepard said. “I think I was just in the point where I was not gonna get hired for movies anymore — I had a bunch that didn’t work — and I’m like, ‘I don’t f***ing know what’s next’ and you were at that time making the most you ever made and having the most opportunity. … I’m following this person around as they do things I wish I were doing. It was a rough period anyways and then I felt all kinds of inadequacy in that position.”
Kate said that their relationship “was a lot fast,” adding, “Honestly, I wasn’t giving Dax what he needed and I was making choices that were not relationship-focused. I was not ready for what Dax — it was so much fun, it got hot fast … and I wasn’t prepared.”
