Sparks, 21, has already inked a deal to make her acting debut in the remake's title role, as one of the three Williams sisters who comprise a hit girl group. Houston may appear in the film -- inspired by the story of The Supremes -- as Sparkle's less than encouraging mother, Effie. The role of Effie was originated by Mary Alice, while Irene Cara first portrayed Sparkle.

The project would be Houston's first major film role in 15 years. The multiplatinum-selling singer -- who voluntarily entered rehab for drug and alcohol treatment in May -- also appeared in 1996's The Preacher's Wife, and previously starred in Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Bodyguard (1992).
