Sochi Winter Olympics 2014: Opening Ceremony Fireworks, Fanfare, and Malfunctions!

Passing the Torch

Tennis star Maria Sharapova entered the stadium with the Olympic torch. The first of six final torchbearers, she passed the flame to pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva, who passed it to wrestler Aleksandr Karelin. The remaining torchbearers -- gymnast Alina Kabaeva, skater Irina Rodnina, and hockey player Vladislav Tretiak -- took the torch outside the stadium to light the cauldron, signifying the official beginning of the Winter Games.
