Idol's Kara DioGuardi Supports Hiring Ellen

Friday – September 11, 2009 – 9:10am

American Idol's Kara DioGuardi is thrilled Ellen DeGeneres has been hired as a new judge.

"I'm a huge Ellen DeGeneres fan," she said in an interview airing Friday on Sirius XM's The Morning Jolt With Larry Flick. "I think she's going to bring so much to the show."

DioGuardi, 38 - who was hired last season as a fourth judge - added that she is relieved some of the focus will be off her.

"Yeah, I got slagged," she said. "People were ... it was difficult for them to accept the change. It was difficult for them to understand why somebody who nobody had ever heard of could kind of come out of nowhere and sit next to these iconic figures. You know, why was I there, what did I do to deserve to do to be there?"

Paula Abdul - who left the show in August after eight season - also approves of DeGeneres, 51.

On her Twitter page Thursday, Abdul, 47, wrote: "I think Ellen will b a gr8 judge on Idol. She is wildly funny, talented and I wish her the best of luck!"

For all of you folks who say you will not watch this show without Paula, or with Ellen, I say "POPPYCOCK". You will tune in just to see how it is going. Idol is just in transition. You know you love idol, otherwise you would not even make comments. And your opinion will still be 'just your opinion'.

Ellen is a great addition. Most of us know nothing about pitch or tone. But we do know if we like something or not and that is what Ellen can bring to the table. She can see things from the non-professional point of view. Kara is a good addition. She understands music and knows what to look at before voicing her opinion. Paula was a great support system for the contestants behind the scenes, but on stage, she did not offer very constructive opinions. Randy and Simon know this business. They know what will or will not sell. This is a great panel with all aspects represented.

Paula explained why she commented on David Cooks song that he hadn't sang yet because just before the show starts there is a rehearsal and that is when she heard the song. I'm commenting on the person below this comment.

One time (during the season that David Cook won) Paula gave feedback on a contestant's song that he hadn't performed yet. I mean, seriously? She gets paid millions and couldn't even keep track of the fact that he'd only sung one song (not two) so far? I can't believe she kept her job as long as she did.

Randy gives random critiques about pitch, Simon gives the harsh critiques, Kara gives the insightful critiques coming from someone with a strong musical background, and now Ellen will give critiques from someone representing how it sounded/looked overall. Paula is sweet but she was always unnecessary, giving critiques that often didn't make sense or ones that consisted entirely of, "Good job!"

I think Simon just lost his mind. I know exactly who Cowell is, but have varying opinions about Paula and Randy, and to a lessor degree, Kara. I am a mature, 50+ male who has enjoyED watching the talent develop on Idol every season. It is unlikely I will watch this season, however, because I think Ellen is an extremely poor choice to host. It hasn't anything to do with her, personally. Just from an entertainment perspective, I have never felt that she is funny or entertaining, or that there will be the "tension" between her and Cowell that obviously the Producers think will develop (for the television audience). Sorry, Ellen. I wish you well, somewhere else.

I can not stand Kara and now with Ellen on board I will find another show to watch. I have watched idol every season since it started. Now I will not watch or vote and my friends and family feel the same way. Paula made the show special.

Ellen has no musical experience. I am not going to watch the show any more. I used to love the show, but now it is becoming a joke. We need a judge with equal or more musical experience as Paula Abdul. Ellen says she wants to be a judge to represent the people. We don't need her, because we can vote and represent ourselves. Get Ellen off of there. I will not watch Idol any more unless they get a judge who has a musical background and knows what they are doing.

We don't need anymore 'musical experts' who never agree anyway. Ellen is a great choice and I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy watching her on Idol far more than I ever did with Paula.

Don't think Kara had a choice of this matter. Ellen will be the center of attention (for the judges), she is well known for many years now. Wonder how much Ellen got - as she probably makes more money on her own "Ellen" show.

what a mistake having Ellen on the show !
  • September 11, 2009 - 12:25pm Anonymous Says:

Fox made a big mistake when they decided to do not agree with Paula. They can substitute somebody by somebody but the question is why they let Paula to resign from her job. They can hire Tyson/the box champion/ for idol show.I think I may not watch the show or vote someone.
  • September 11, 2009 - 11:47am Being a judge isn't funny business Says:

I think Ellen is a poor choice. Randy is a musician, Simon a producer, Paula was a singer, Kara was a singer and songwriter, and now we have Ellen…what? How does that make any sense? She would be humorous as a guest judge, with no voting power, as she was on So You Think You Can Dance, but I fail to see what Ellen will be able to judge regarding any aspect of what would make someone a music star. Keep Ellen as a comedian and talk show host that is where she shines, and find another person from the music industry to be a judge. You can’t honestly tell me there are no former boy band members, one hit wonders, musicians, etc., who wouldn’t love to be a judge and at least they would know the business.

I'm really going to miss Paula. I wasn't going to watch but now they have hired Ellen, who I like, I may give it another try. Although I admire Kara and think she's great, I have never enjoyed her being on the show, except when she shot down Bikini girl with her fabulous singing, that was cool. Again, I'll really miss Paula but welcome Ellen.
  • September 11, 2009 - 10:30am A I Watcher Says:

The choice to hire Ellen is brilliant! She has a good relationship with all 3 judges, she's incredibly good-natured which the contestants are going to eat up, and her ability to think up very funny one-liners on the spot is well known. When Simon gets out of line, she'll be putting him in his place with some classics, something that is just not Paula's forte. Also, you won't hear her getting stuck using the same adjectives over and over and over again like the other three. She'll be fresh. With four judges, we don't need to hear four "expert" opinions (that became clear over the course of last season).

Replace Kara with Paula!!! Kara doesn't connect with the audience.
  • September 11, 2009 - 9:41am Anonymous Says:

I think this a bad move.who will spare with Simon? Kara may take over but I don't like her. Never did. If something works why change it. Paula should have gotten more money. I will not be watching this year or any other year again. My friends say they will not either.
