If you haven’t been keeping up with the latest Project Runway scandal involving Jeffrey Sebelia, New York magazine breaks it down for you in this week’s issue.
It seems that several months back, the show’s remaining contestants left the supervision of the producers to go home and create their final collections. When PR’s resident mentor and silver fox Tim Gunn, checked in on Sebelia in L.A., he declared, “He had a lot of work to do.”
So when Sebelia showed up in Bryant Park three weeks later with a miraculously finished collection, contestant Laura Bennett called bullsh-t. (Bennett had heard about the unfinished collection through her mom, who had heard from Sebelia's mother with whom she became friendly after meeting on a previous show.) Also suspicious? Sebelia’s typically deconstructed designs were uncharacteristically polished.
Bennett told the producers she thought Sebelia had cheated and outsourced his sewing. “We took the accusation very seriously, and we did a very intense and thorough investigation,” Gunn tells New York. “His collection was very ambitious. I wasn’t born yesterday.”
Bravo would not allow Gunn to reveal the resolution of the scandal, but Sebelia reportedly posted the following message on a concerned fan’s MySpace page:
Hey!!! Thanks for the concern, but all I have to say is be careful of what you read and also of what is presented in the press. Those people take any information they get (usually unfounded rumors) and just print them in order to bolster their own readership with no regard to the person they might be slandering. They are just doing their job as bottom feeding, sludge dredging, no-life having journalists.
Sebelia had better hope it's not true for his sake, or he can look forward to a life of designing Gap's next incarnation of their relaxed fit Boyfriend Jean.
The three finalists will be revealed October 4, and the winner October 18.
