
John Travolta
John Joseph Travolta was born in New Jersey in 1954. Under the influence of his mother, an actress and singer, he dropped out of high school and found work on Broadway with "Grease” and “Over Here!” After his Broadway work, he crossed the country to Los Angeles where he would gain international stardom with megahits like Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction. Known mostly for his ‘70s dance moves, Travolta is fashioning a comeback with upcoming films, including the silver screen version of the Broadway classic Hairspray, in which Travolta played the iconic Edna Turnblad. Travolta is married to actress Kelly Preston and they have two sons. The actor is also a practicing Scientologist. Travolta made his film debut around the same time as his television debut. When he moved to L.A. in the ‘70s, he was cast in the horror movie Carrie and the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter. Then, in quick succession, Saturday Night Fever (1977), Grease (1978), and Urban Cowboy (1980), followed by a series of flops. Travolta took some time off until “Look Who’s Talking” and “Pulp Fiction” provided a comeback. Travolta was nominated for an Oscar for his “Pulp Fiction” role and has since appeared in Get Shorty, Face/Off, A Civil Action, Michael, Phenomenon, Primary Colors and Be Cool, among others.
