Maria Jose Alvarado, who was recently crowned Miss Honduras, and her older sister Sofia were found dead on Wednesday, Nov. 19, the Honduras National Police director told the Associated Press.
The bodies were discovered near the Aguagua River in the Honduran village of Cablotales. According to the AP, both Maria, 19, and Sofia Trinidad, 23, were shot to death.
The shocking deaths of the siblings come six days after they were last seen in a spa in the local city of Santa Barbara on Thursday, and reported missing on Saturday. The girls were at the spa to celebrate the birthday of Sofia's boyfriend Plutarco Ruiz.
Gen. Ramon Sabillon told the AP that both Ruiz and an accomplice, Aris Maldonado, have been apprehended and arrested.
Maria was crowned Miss Honduras in April, making her eligible to compete in the Miss World Pageant in London this December. She was expected to fly to London on Sunday, Nov. 16.
According to an April report from the UN, Honduras has the highest homicide rate (90.4 people murdered per 100,000), making it the murder capital of the world.
