Say what?! Blake Lively’s days spent filming The Shallows were basically superlong workouts. The actress, who is now pregnant with her second child, told Entertainment Tonight how she got bikini ready for the shark thriller, and how working on the film made her even stronger.
“Well, you know, I had an amazing trainer,” Lively told ET. “I was fortunate to have Don Saladino help me out, and he just kicked my butt in the best way, in the most healthy way.”
The Gossip Girl alum, 28, said she had to get in shape not just for the “sake of being in a bikini,” but for the physical challenges she faced while filming.
In the film, which is reminiscent of Jaws, Lively plays medical student Nancy who travels to a secluded beach alone to surf and ends up stranded after being attacked by a great white shark.
“Being in waves like that, swimming like that, doing such long takes like that all the time — I became so much stronger and more fit by the end of production,” she said of the eight weeks they spent filming in Australia. “I was working out 13 hours a day because shooting was working out. It was neat to be able to do that, and it was neat to have that challenge after having a baby, because you think your body is so different — you think no matter what, it’s never [going to be] totally be the same.”
Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, welcomed daughter James in December 2014.
After she wrapped up the film, she ended up being in the best shape of her life. “I thought, ‘That’s really encouraging,’” she told ET.
The Shallows hits theaters Friday, June 24.
