Chrissy Teigen Thanks Kate Upton: Models Don’t Have to Be “Anorexically Skinny” Anymore

Chrissy Teigen thanks Kate Upton for proving that models don't have to be abnormally skinny to be successful. Paul Morigi/

If you follow model Chrissy Teigen on Twitter or Instagram, you know she’s hilarious, unfiltered, sassy, and sometimes controversial. I can tell you that she’s exactly the same in person.

On Wednesday, May 15, Gillette threw Teigen — who’s a spokesperson for Venus razors — a “bridal shower” to celebrate her upcoming nuptials to John Legend. We grabbed her for a quick chat and she dished about her wedding, her pal Kate Upton’s Vogue cover, and more.

So are you actually telling people when you’re getting married? We are saying the fall now. We’re getting closer and closer.

Do you have a dress? I do have a dress. A Vera Wang — amazing.

Do you have a color picked out for your bridesmaids and are they all going to wear the same dress? I have 10 [bridesmaids]! I’m terrible at this stuff so I really trust our wedding planner, Lisa Vorce — she’s fantastic. As far as bridesmaids colors, I want everyone to wear neutral colors. I want everyone to be in whites and creams, too.

What’s your favorite kind of swimsuit to wear — if you, not Sports Illustrated, were choosing? I love a one piece, and I love that one pieces are coming back. I love a retro one piece or a strapless one piece. No cut-outs, no Vegas weird bullshit. Just a one piece–I think it’s so sexy.

What do you think of those super high cut one pieces from the 80s and 90s? They seem to be coming back. I look weird in that because my bones show, my ovaries show. I don’t want my ovaries showing!

So your fellow SI model, Kate Upton just scored a Vogue cover. Are you friends with her? I am friends with her. She looks absolutely amazing. I texted her immediately as soon as I saw it and I said, “Kate, I have never..not only Vogue..but I’ve never seen a cover of anything this beautiful in my entire life.” Mario Testino is absolutely amazing. I just got chills thinking about it. Kate is in her most fantastic time, doing fashion covers!

Do you think she’ll bring the models back to Vogue? The frustrating part is I can’t go on castings anymore for any magazine and think I’m gonna get the cover, because I’m not a celebrity. Kate is bringing the model back, but more than anything I think she’s bringing confidence back within people. I know that I shot the other day and the fact that I didn’t feel like I had to be anorexically skinny, that made me truly feel good. And Kate has done that for people.
