Amber Portwood and her boyfriend, Andrew Glennon, have been dating for about four months. So when the Teen Mom OG star became pregnant, she was understandably uneasy about breaking the news to her family.
“I was nervous,” Portwood, 27, tells Us Weekly exclusively in the upcoming issue. “Obviously it’s non-traditional. Usually parents want you to be married first and things like that. But you know me, if I didn’t do things the way I did, I wouldn’t be me.”
Portwood was pleasantly surprised by her folks’ reaction. “They ended up being very excited and happy for us, so it all turned out well,” she tells Us. “Andrew just told his family as well and they’re very happy for us.”
Portwood confirmed exclusively to Us Weekly on Friday, November 3, that she and Glennon are expecting their first child together. They met while she was filming Marriage Boot Camp with her ex-fiancé Matt Baier.
Portwood’s pregnancy announcement came as somewhat of a shock to fans: the MTV personality, who shares 8-year-old Leah with former fiancé Gary Shirley, revealed on season 6 of Teen Mom OG earlier this year that she was done having kids. In the episode, Portwood explained that the medication she takes for her borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder could potentially harm a fetus. However, Portwood stopped taking the prescription pills about three months ago after splitting from Baier.
“I wanted to see if I was just unhappy because of the things that were going on in my life at the time with him, and I realized after weaning myself off that I actually am OK,” she tells Us. “It’s manageable as long as you have a healthy lifestyle and healthy people around you.”
