It’s been nearly nine years since Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra, who were in high school at the time, placed their daughter Carly for adoption. The emotional process was featured on the first season of MTV’s 16 & Pregnant in 2009 and continues to be a story line on the network’s hit spinoff Teen Mom OG.

To commemorate Carly’s 9th birthday, which she will celebrate on Friday, May 18, Catelynn, 26, shared a touching message on Instagram. (Carly lives with her parents, Brandon and Teresa in North Carolina.)

“I can’t believe that 9 years ago Tyler and I were waiting to go to the hospital to make one of the hardest decisions of our lives . . . but it ended up being one of the BEST things we could have done for her,” Catelynn wrote in her Thursday, May 17, post. “Carly we love you so much and are so proud of you! #birthdaygirl #adoptionjourney.”

The Michigan-based middle school sweethearts tied the knot in August 2015. They are parents of 3-year-old daughter Novalee a.k.a.“Nova.” In Catelynn’s birthday tribute, a pigtailed Nova is seen eating a popsicle with Carly, whose face is hidden. Brandon and Teresa have requested that the couple not post any images of Carly on social media. The picture was taken when Catelynn and Tyler reunited with Carly in August 2017.

When a Twitter follower asked Tyler how Nova and Carly reacted when they saw each other, he wrote, “Carly ran right to me with a huge smile on her face when I was holding Nova. “It was pretty precious.”
