Drew Barrymore on Pregnancy Weight Gain: I’m Bigger This Time, Doctor Told Me to “Pull Back”

Drew Barrymore on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' on Jan. 13, 2014
Drew Barrymore says she's eating more during her second pregnancy and was told by her doctor to "maybe pull back a little bit" on her cravings

Drew Barrymore's second baby is a hungry one! During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday, Jan. 13, the pregnant-again actress revealed that she's been hitting the pantry a little harder this time around — maybe too hard, according to her physician.

"Oh God. I mean, I just eat everything I want, which isn't healthy. I'm bigger this time than my first time," the 38-year-old star told DeGeneres of expecting another daughter with husband Will Kopelman. "My doctor the other day was like, 'Yeah, so I think maybe pull back a little bit.' I was like, 'Really?'"

"I thought I was doing great," she added. "I still fit into those jeans. I mean, they hurt when I wear them, but I'm still in them…I just want to enjoy the pasta right now. It's not like it's going to look that much different! What's 10 pounds?"

"You deserve anything you want," DeGeneres agreed. "You are making a human being. That is hard work…I mean, eat whatever you want."

"Thank you!" Barrymore replied. "When I'm, like, twirling those vegetable pan fried noodles from, like, Chinese takeout later, I'm going to say Ellen said that it was way okay to do that."

The Big Miracle star — already mom to daughter Olive, 15 months — also brought up the talk show host's comments to her at the People's Choice Awards, when DeGeneres joked that the actress had gotten "fat."

"I hadn't seen you in a while, and instead of saying, 'Oh, you're pregnant, I just thought it would be funny to say, 'God, you're fat,'" the comedienne explained.

"And the truth is, your joke was super funny. The entire room was laughing," Barrymore replied. "I went out [onstage] and thought I would try it myself, and it just flooded and dudded."

As previously reported, the second-time mom-to-be brought daughter Olive with her to DeGeneres' studio, and the cutie pie showed up in several Instagram shots online. Asked whether Olive understands that she's going to have a sister, Barrymore replied, "She points to my stomach and goes, 'Baby.' So I don't know. What do you think?"

"She's really smart," Barrymore gushed of her daughter. "And she can do every animal noise — we're up to 26 animals! I'm telling you, it's amazing. Camel is her favorite, and crocodile and snake. She does it all! I'm telling you, she's bright!"
