“I think [it] was really shocking to me because I never thought that I would be a person who got postnatal depression,” Paltrow, 45, said during a Goop podcast episode, titled ““Gwyneth x Blythe: On Mothers and Daughters.”

She added: “I was so euphoric when Apple was born, and I assumed it would happen with Mosey and it just … it took a while. I really went into a dark place.”

Paltrow shares son Moses, 12, and daughter Apple, 13, with ex-husband Chris Martin, who was actually the one who pointed out a change in her following the birth of their son in 2006. (The pair announced their decision to “consciously uncouple” in 2014.)

“I couldn’t connect with my son the way that I had with my daughter and I couldn’t understand why. I couldn’t connect to anyone. I felt like a zombie. I felt very detached,” she recalled during an episode of Lifetime’s The Conversation With Amanda de Cadenet in 2016. “I just didn’t know what was wrong with me. I couldn’t figure it out. It never occurred to me. My husband actually said, ‘Something’s wrong. I think you have postnatal depression.’ I was mortified. ‘No I don’t!’ And then I started researching what it was and the symptoms and I was like, ‘Oh, yes I do.'”

One year earlier, Paltrow told Entertainment Tonight: “[My case] was low-grade enough that I didn’t have to be hospitalized, but it’s a very debilitating thing, and I think there’s so much shame around it and there shouldn’t be.”

Paltrow is now engaged to producer Brad Falchuk. Us Weekly exclusively broke the news of their engagement in November 2017 and they confirmed the news two months later.
