Joe Jonas is looking back at an “intense” near-death experience during a recent vacation in Italy.
“This is very rocky,” Jonas, 37, recalled on The Morgan Stewart Show on Wednesday, September 23, recalling how he tried to jump from a yacht to a tender boat while on his way to a waterfront restaurant with friends. “So, the first mate is helping me onto the tender. … And then, he’s like, ‘Alright, go for it’ … So, I take a step, but as I take a step, a wave came in, and it pushed the boat far out from the yacht.”
The Jonas Brothers member realized it sounded like the “most bougiest problem” to have, but it became “terrifying” when he and the first mate both fell in the water and got stuck between the vessels.
“We’re between these boats,” he continued. “We’re fully dressed, my phone’s in my pocket, everything. And I come up, I’m so out of it. I’m just like, ‘What the f*** just happened?’”
Jonas swam “away” from the boats and eventually managed to get to an area where he could safely climb onto one of the decks. However, he hit his shin on the way up and fell back into the water.
“So, I kind of rolled onto this tender soaking wet,” he recalled, insisting that he was “fine.”
Stewart, 38, was present when the incident occurred and recalled her fears as she watched everything unfold.
“I was like, ‘Vacation’s over. Vacation’s over,’” she said. “It’s going to hit him in the head, and we’re going to lose a Jonas Brother.”
She told Jonas, “You had to swim quite a bit. It was very scary.”
Though Jonas said his “adrenaline” was pumping for a long time after the incident, he eventually came down from the “anxiousness.” He remembered looking at girlfriend Tatiana Gabriela and saying, “That s*** was really scary.”
“That really spooked me for a while. It was really intense,” he added.
Jonas said his first thought after calming down was that he needed to call his daughters, Willa, 6, and Delphine, 4, “right away.” (The singer shares his kids with ex-wife Sophie Turner.)
“I just need to call them. I need to see them,” he recalled saying. “I need to see their faces. All I thought about was, ‘I want to speak to them.’”
Jonas added that what happened was “the best outcome of a bad situation,” noting it “could have been really bad” had things gone another way.
“Life moves so fast, and it’s so easy that something really bad can happen if [you] don’t have your awareness about you,” he concluded.
