Kyle Busch and his wife, Samantha, walked the NASCAR Awards red carpet in November 2018, just moments after finding out that they had suffered a miscarriage.

Samantha was congratulated on her pregnancy at the event and kept their loss a secret. She admitted to the Charlotte Observer on Sunday, February 17, “It was hard to hear, but I also wasn’t ready to give it up yet. … I was still kind of in that mindset of, I’m not going to accept it yet. ‘Thank you, thank you,’ because I am still pregnant, but it was a very weird state of emotions and shock.”

Samantha had just received the phone call from her doctor while getting ready in her Las Vegas hotel room. Afterward, she told Kyle she still wanted to go through with the banquet.

“I didn’t want to be separated from [him],” she added. “Being alone in that hotel room would’ve probably killed me.”

The couple, who tied the knot in 2010, welcomed their son, Brexton, in 2015 after Samantha was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome and went through in vitro fertilization.

The new mom opened up about her IVF process on social media. “Even five years ago, I feel like IVF was a little more hush-hush, a little more secretive, or people didn’t voice it as openly,” she said. “There was a little stigma around it, and there still is. We felt like we were going through this for a reason. I just felt like women needed to know they weren’t alone.”

Although she kept her miscarriage a secret on the November 29 red carpet, she opened up about it on social media the next day.

“Earlier this week, I suffered a miscarriage,” she wrote on Twitter, along with an emotional video she hasn’t watched since. “We lost our baby girl. My heart hurts more than words can describe. I promise I will answer your questions and share more updates when we are ready, we just need some time as a family to process all of this.”

While the couple’s son tells people he had a baby sister who “went to God,” Kyle admitted that Samantha is still very broken up about the miscarriage.

“She feels like she lost her little girl, and a life within her, and in my mind, I agree with her,” he said. “It sucks. It’s sad, it’s disappointing, it makes you mad, it makes you wonder why, but in all reality, everybody always tells you, ‘There has to be a reason.’ Samantha doesn’t want to hear that. She wanted that girl, that baby girl — and she’s not with us.”

As far as trying to get pregnant again, Samantha said they aren’t giving up and that Brexton is still “hoping to be” a big brother. “[The doctors] had told us we could start trying basically a few weeks after it happened, but we weren’t ready yet,” she said.
