“Obviously, you kind of want to reach a point in your pregnancy where you’re sure that everything is going well before you let other people in on it,” the 35-year-old explained to PopCulture.com in an interview published on Tuesday, September 11. “Stuff like that was important. You don’t want to jump the gun and then have to take it back.” (Many women choose to share their pregnancy news at the 12-week mark, when the risk of miscarriage is dramatically reduced.)

The American Idol winner planned to keep baby No. 2 under wraps for a bit longer, but then her baby bump appeared. “I was like, ‘I guess today’s the day. I can’t hide this anymore,” Underwood explained. “Going to the grocery store and it’s 90-something degrees outside and I’m in giant hoodies. It was just time to put it out there.”

Finally on August 8, Underwood announced on Instagram that she and the retired ice hockey player, 38, would be giving their son Isaiah, 3, a sibling.

Though Fisher is pampering his wife of eight years, she is also looking after herself by releasing endorphins with her trainer, Erin Oprea.

“I feel like it’s my therapy everyday,” Underwood revealed. “I don’t go get massages. I don’t go get facials. That would be great. I might get a massage twice a year — some Mother’s Day present or something, which I literally have a gift card for that, that’s like two years old that I have no used for Mother’s Day.”

The Oklahoma native, who now lives in Nashville, Tennessee, pointed out the physical demands of performing. “I need to be at my peak. I need to be able to sing and walk across the stage without being winded,” she said. “And I’m doing it in heels, which makes it five times as hard.” Exercise, noted Underwood, “makes me feel better about myself. It makes me feel better. I need that in my life.”

Underwood’s Cry Pretty album will be released on Friday, September 14.
