Duck Dynasty star Sadie Robertson shared an update on her 9-month-old daughter Kit’s “horribly traumatic” choking incidents.
“Our first trip to the pediatrician, I tell him [that Kit] breathes really loud,” Robertson, 28, recalled on the Wednesday, May 20, episode of her “Whoa That’s Good” podcast. “And he said, ‘Oh, yeah, she does. I can hear that.’ He said, ‘I bet she has,’ and he wrote it down … laryngomalacia.”
Robertson’s doctor explained that Kit likely had a “floppy throat” and “turbulent breathing” that were consistent with symptoms of laryngomalacia, a voice box disorder.
“He said laryngomalacia is very common in babies,” Robertson recalled. “It’s, like, their little airway [and] their voice box is supposed to be a little hole, but it’s actually going to be shaped like this because the skin is kind of bent and that’s what makes it kind of flop, and that’s what makes her sound loud when she breathes. He says it’s really, most of the time, nothing to worry about as long as she’s eating fine, her oxygen levels are good.”
Kit briefly stopped breathing in April, as Robertson and husband Christian Huff noticed that their daughter’s body turned blue. She was ultimately resuscitated after a round of CPR. Robertson and Huff, who also share daughters Honey and Haven, took Kit to the hospital after she started choking again weeks later.
“Before we even are fully admitted, [the doctor] already goes ahead and does the scope to look at the laryngomalacia, and within the first second, she goes, ‘OK, I would definitely classify this as severe laryngomalacia,’” Robertson said on Wednesday. “We’re just, like, thankful to be in good hands and [have] someone who’s listening to us and taking it really seriously.”
Kit’s surgical procedures were pushed back after the toddler tested positive for both rhinovirus and croup. Upon her recovery, doctors performed the surgery as planned to address the laryngomalacia.
“When we did the surgery, it was wild because getting to see the pictures of the before and after,” Robertson said. “It was severe. I mean, her airway was so covered. … Thank you, Lord, that we’re in this place. Thank you, Lord, that you provided.”
Kit was discharged from the hospital the next day, and Robertson noticed a “dramatic improvement” into how her daughter ate, took a bottle and her overall demeanor.
“We could not be more thankful when we look back at that,” she stressed. “We’re like, ‘Wow, God, like you really did provide in the absolute craziest ways, in ways that, like, you can’t make up.’”
