Suspect Reported Dead After Ohio State University Attack, 10 Hospitalized

UPDATE 3:30 p.m. ET: Per ABC, a U.S. official identified the suspect as Abdul Razak Ali Artan, an 18-year-old Somali refugee.

UPDATE: Per the Associated Press, the shelter-in-place warning was lifted around 11:40 a.m. Classes have been canceled for the rest of the day. OSU said in a statement that the “injuries include stab wounds, injury by motor vehicle and other injuries that are being evaluated.”

It is unclear whether a shooting took place. The 18-year-old suspect drove into a group of pedestrians before using a butcher knife to cut people and was then shot by police.

ORIGINAL STORY: A shooting at Ohio State University sent at least 10 people to the hospital Monday, November 28, the Columbus Fire Department confirmed to CNN.

The Columbus, Ohio, school sent a series of tweets to students and faculty urging them to take shelter Monday morning. It is unclear whether the shooting is still in progress or if the assailant has been detained. According to ABC, one suspect is dead; authorities are still searching for other possible suspects.

“Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College,” one tweet read around 10 a.m. ET. Thirty minutes later, a second tweet instructed: “Wait for Police officers directions. Please contact Police / 9-1-1 only if you have information.”

Per CNN, one victim is in critical condition and nine are in stable condition. The incident reportedly took place near Watts Hall, the university’s materials science and engineering building. Police cars and fire trucks have blocked off streets surrounding the area.

Ohio State University is one of the nation’s largest schools, with more than 65,000 students enrolled. Some have been posting photos on social media during the lockdown. In one picture, students can be seen barricading themselves in a classroom by blocking the door with dozens of desks.
