NFL player Andrew Quarless got emotional on Monday, Aug. 3, as he discussed his newborn daughter's death with reporters.

"Probably the saddest day of my life," the Green Bay Packers tight end, 26, told ESPN and other reporters. His little daughter, who was the second child with his longtime girlfriend Rosie Sierra, passed away during childbirth last Wednesday, July 29. The girl, had she survived, would have joined the couple's 5-year-old son Aiden.

"He was really looking forward to being a big brother," Quarless — fighting back tears — said of his son, who watched his athlete dad practice on Monday. Quarless missed the first two sessions of training camp, and returned to the field this past Saturday.

Sierra, meanwhile, tweeted on July 22, that she was excited to welcome their little girl. "Counting down the days….can't wait to meet our Princess!!" she wrote.

"It's been a lot. It's been a lot," Quarless continued on Monday. "As you grow older as a man, you really understand life and you really understand things. I'm so appreciative of this team. Even from the incident earlier in the month, there's just been so much support. More than I feel like sometimes I might deserve. Just the amount of love from everybody, it's really been good for me. It's hard to explain how much that means to me. I'm just thankful."

Indeed, the Penn State grad is coming off a rough summer. On Independence Day, he was arrested in Miami Beach after he allegedly fired two shots in the air in public. Still, the Packers stuck with Quarless.

"I just apologized to him for bringing negativity to this place," Quarless told ESPN of the team's coach, Mike McCarthy. "We have a great group of character guys. There's just so much character in this locker room. I just apologized for bringing negative because you never want to bring negative to something like this. He did tell me to just focus. Don't be too hard on yourself. As a man, you learn, you make mistakes and you learn from them. His biggest thing is to just stay focused, and I kind of took that into my training, just tried to focus on my training, trained hard and tried to come back in the best shape I can. That was my main goal."

Quarless is currently in year two of a two year contract worth $3 million with the team. He added on Monday that he was trying to move past the devastation. "Today was rough," he concluded. "I’m a little drained. I was drained the past couple of days. Just to get out there today, it was a great feeling. It was a great feeling being around my teammates having fun and actually smile. Actually to smile and be happy, that was good for me."
