No red soles for Shailene! Ansel Elgort opened up to Seventeen in its April 2015 cover story about his real-life friendship with Shailene Woodley, his on-screen love interest in The Fault in Our Stars and his sibling in the Divergent series.

The Insurgent hunk, 20, was honest about whether platonic relationships can exist between him and the opposite gender. “If a woman is really pretty, it’s kind of hard,” Elgort told the mag. “I’m not going to lie.”

He said the one exception in his own personal life was none other than Woodley. “Actually, that’s not true. Me and Shailene have a really platonic relationship,” Elgort noted. “I’ve never once wanted her sexually, which is nice. But for me, if a person is someone I’m attracted to, and she’s my best friend, hopefully we’re dating.”

Elgort has luckily found that person in his longtime love and high school girlfriend Violetta Komysha — and he treats her well! “I like to buy girls shoes and jewelry. I buy stupidly expensive shoes,” the actor mused. “I got Louboutins for my mom and my girlfriend before. My mom was like, ‘I can’t wear these; they’re too high.’ I was like, ‘Mom, you have to try them – they’re so cool. They’re red snakeskin!’ She still wears them every so often but she can’t walk in them.”

While Elgort enjoys spoiling the ladies in his life with material things, the New York native says nothing is better than spending time together. “I like romantic dates,” he told Seventeen. “Going on a long walk in Central Park and then taking the subway downtown and going out to eat and ordering oysters. After that, you walk around again and talk. Morning dates are nice, too. I love doing romantic s—. It’s fun. It’s like you’re living in a movie.”

Elgort also that he likes to create trouble from time to time. “[My friend] Jordan and I used to throw eggs off my roof and hit cars,” he recalled of his high school years. “We got in trouble with the police when I was 15. They came to our door. I told my dad [fashion photographer Arthur Elgort], ‘We were throwing eggs off the roof and you were out of town and they got really mad at us and said if we did it again we would get in trouble, but we’re never going to do it again.’ I said it all in one sentence. He was like, ‘Okay.'”

The April 2015 issue of Seventeen hits stands on Mar. 24.
