Charice opened up about her sexuality and gender identity in an upcoming episode of Oprah Winfrey’s Where Are They Now?, which is set to air Sunday, Oct. 19. The former Glee guest star discussed her different appearance and when she knew she was gay.
“I knew when I was 5,” Charice, 22, told Winfrey in a sneak peek clip. “I was in grade school and I saw this girl and I felt different. I didn’t know what it was but I just knew that time, like it felt special. And when I was 10 I was like, ‘Oh, that’s it. I’m gay.’ I found the word.”
Winfrey, who invited the talented singer on her eponymous show in 2010, then asked if Charice had thought about transitioning to become a male.
“Not exactly transitioning to a male, but basically my soul is like male,” Charice replied. “But I’m not going to go through that stage where I’m going to change everything—not change my body. I would change, like, this look: Cut my hair and wear boy clothes and everything, but that’s all.”
Amid rumors of her sexuality, Charice came out as gay during an appearance on the show The Buzz in June 2013.
“Opo, tomboy po ako,” she said, which means “Yes, I am a lesbian.” After the revelation, she tearfully added: “Now I feel free. I can go out of the house without fear and be certain that I’m not stepping on anybody’s toes.”
Charice’s episode of Where Are They Now? airs Sunday, Oct. 19 on OWN.
