David Beckham's dreams have been dashed: He won't be going to the World Cup.
While playing for AC Milan Sunday, Beckham, 34, tore his left Achilles' tendon. In the final minutes of Milan's match with Chievo, Beckham — who was on loan to Milan from U.S. team LA Galaxy — trapped a pass with his left foot, took an awkward step back and then stepped forward before he started hopping on his right foot.
Visibly in pain and in tears, he went to the sideline for medical attention.
Said Fabio Capello, Beckham's national manager: "I am very sad for David that he has suffered this injury. We have to wait for the results of the scan, but it looks like he is out of the World Cup … David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup, so missing it will be a big blow."
According to his website, Beckham is now on his way to Finland "to see a specialist and have a scan on the injury. He is understandably upset but wants to thank everyone for their messages of support. He hopes to make a swift and full recovery."
His wife Victoria Beckham is reportedly jetting out of Los Angeles Monday to be by his side.
Beckham has appeared in three World Cups over his career.
