Two kids are enough for Dax Shepard. The actor revealed during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday, May 18, that he got a vasectomy last year after his wife, Kristen Bell, had a pregnancy scare.
Kimmel asked the 41-year-old comedian whether more kids are in the cards for the couple, who are already parents of daughters Lincoln, 3, and Delta, 17 months. “Ah, no,” Shepard replied. “Last year, my wife was working in Atlanta. We were there and she all of a sudden goes, ‘Oh, my gosh! I’m so stupid. I’ve been sick for 10 days and ignoring it. I’m definitely pregnant.’ And I was like, ‘We’re going to turn into Jon & Kate Plus 8 or something. We already have no life! This is going to be not worth living.’ I freaked out. It was so bad.”
He said he had to wait all day for Bell, 35, to return home from filming so she could take a pregnancy test. “For eight hours I was, like, imagining my life with all these kids,” he said, but it turned out to be a false alarm. “That was Tuesday. I flew home Wednesday for a meeting. Thursday morning I had a vasectomy.”
The Parenthood alum hastily decided to take permanent measures to prevent any additions to the family. “I had a vasectomy, and Kristen was not thrilled I did it so quickly, but I’m a man of action,” he said. “I was in and out. I was back in Atlanta two days after that, shooting a Samsung commercial.”
Shepard went on to share a TMI story about collecting a sperm sample so doctors could make sure the procedure was effective. “They don’t provide an area there at the urology clinic to service yourself, so you have to bring in a sample,” he explained. After a meeting ran late, he only had 15 minutes to “procure” his sample and drive to the clinic in Beverly Hills. “I had to drive crosstown, rush hour. Thank God there was heavy traffic on Laurel Canyon, so it slowed down enough that I could … I literally masturbated on Laurel Canyon in heavy traffic. It’s one thing to loosey-goosey just go for it, but I have a jar and it’s heavy traffic. It’s very curvy,” he said of the twisty road. “It’s hard enough to get through that road while not making love to yourself, into a container. Anyways, the great news is I’m sterile.”
The CHiPs director and the Boss actress started dating in 2007, but waited until 2013 to tie the knot when California legalized same-sex marriage. Both stars have previously been vocal about wanting two children. “We don’t want to be outnumbered,” Bell told Ellen DeGeneres in February 2015. “We’re gonna cap it at two.”
