After EJ Johnson’s drastic weight loss and recent attention on his high-fashion, feminine style, many wondered if he was planning to transition, and during a new episode of his docuseries EJNYC, he reveals that it’s something he considered after Caitlyn Jenner came out last year.
In the clip, the Rich Kids of Beverly Hills star, 24, meets with a therapist and opens up about his gender identity. “I’ve always been very fashion-forward,” he says. “I’ve always definitely mixed men’s and women’s fashion in my life, but I never thought that it would raise so many questions about my own gender. I never really thought it was under investigation.”
“Sometimes it’s hard being in the middle, kind of in the gray area in my own lane,” he continues. “Now, since everybody’s talking about Caitlyn Jenner and being transgender, people are so quick to say, ‘Oh, just because you’re dressing like that means that you’re going to transition to become a woman.’”
Johnson explains that the attention surrounding Jenner made him question if this was something he would ever do. “I thought about it, for sure,” he tells the therapist. “I was just like, ‘Well, do I want to transition? Is this something that I would do?’ But I don’t feel incomplete in that way. I don’t feel the need to do that.”
The TV personality decided to visit the therapist after his friend pointed out that he was being compared to Kim Kardashian for wearing the same dress, and commenters on the article were speculating that Johnson might transition. “I think it’s an honor,” he said of the style comparison to female celebs. “I wouldn’t want to be compared to some random man who’s wearing a tuxedo and I’m wearing a lace jumpsuit — like, it just doesn’t make any sense.”
However, the conversation did spur deeper thoughts about transitioning. “I’m interested to talk about what it means to actually transition. Like, if you’re going to take that leap or that step, what’s going on mentally that’s telling you, ‘This is what I need to do?’ Because I don’t feel that way.”
