Elton John celebrated his mother’s life in a private funeral service on Wednesday, January 3.
“Dear Mum, Today’s funeral was perfect. Having the service in the family chapel and attended by your brother and sister brought us all comfort,” the 70-year-old singer captioned an Instagram photo of his late mother Sheila Farebrother’s funeral plaque. “Having the service where Nan lived out her final days brought you and your Mother back together again. Tomorrow your friends will gather separately to say their goodbyes. I’ve chosen all the music so everything will be just right. Thank you for bringing me into the world and for all that you have done for me. Love, Elton #RIP.”
As previously reported, Farebrother died at age 92 in early December, months after she and the “Rocket Man” crooner reportedly reconnected after being estranged for years. John revealed the news of his mother’s passing with an emotional tweet at the time, noting that he was “in shock” over the loss.
The musician honored Farebrother during his concert in Hamburg, Germany, one day after her passing, according to BBC. “Yesterday was a sad and hard day for me because my mother passed away,” the Grammy winner reportedly told the audience at the time. “I’m glad to say she passed away peacefully, with no pain. But maybe sooner than she should have, so I was quite shocked. And I was thinking how I could pay tribute to her tonight and what song I should choose.”
John ultimately played the track “Your Song” to pay tribute to his mother, as he wrote it at the start of his career at Farebrother’s home. “So this is the song I want to dedicate to her. And it’s taken me from nowhere to somewhere,” he explained. “So thank you, mom.”
Farebrother’s cause of death has not yet been revealed.
