Eric Roberts is addressing his noticeable absence from daughter Emma Roberts’ weekend wedding.
“I love my daughter, always have, always will,” Eric, 70, said in a statement to Us on Monday, July 27, breaking his silence after missing his daughter’s nuptials. “It is perfectly wonderful for her to celebrate however she wants, with whomever she wants.”
Emma, 35, and her longtime partner, Cody John, said “I do” in an intimate Idaho ceremony on Saturday, July 25, according to photos obtained by Vogue. The groom looked handsome in a custom espresso-colored Ferragamo suit, while the bride stunned in a one-shouldered ivory Monique Lhuillier gown.
Julia Roberts was spotted at a private Idaho residence where her niece’s wedding was held on Saturday, according to photos obtained by Page Six.
Eric, however, was seen leaving a Los Angeles-based Crunch Gym on Sunday, July 26.
During an April appearance on the “Really Famous With Kara Mayer Robinson” podcast, Eric — who shares Emma with his ex, Kelly Cunningham — was asked if he has a “complicated” relationship with his daughter.
“Not really. It’s only complicated through outside eyes because they don’t get any of it, so they have their own take, whatever that is,” the Runaway Train actor explained. “I’m so proud of my daughter. I’m so proud of my kid. She didn’t start off as a great actor, but she became a great actor. She’s fabulous.”
According to Eric, people have their assumptions about his relationship, but “they’re not really involved.”
One bond that is stronger than ever is Emma’s love story with John, 36. The actors have tried to keep their relationship out of the spotlight ever since they became Instagram official in August 2022.
Emma herself has stated before that there is power in privacy, especially when it comes to her closest relationships.
“I never want to talk about relationships I’m in or that are ending or have ended. It’s hard enough to be with someone by yourself, let alone with an audience,” she told Cosmopolitan in May 2019. “Growing up is hard. Sometimes it makes me sad that I can’t have a private moment. Because of Twitter and Instagram, there’s a whole other element where everybody can comment on what you’re doing, and no one knows the real story.”
In July 2024, Emma was able to share the good news that she was engaged to John.
“Putting this here before my mom tells everyone ❤️,” she wrote via Instagram at the time, jokingly referring to her mom sharing her private life.
