Evan Rachel Wood: “I Thought I Was in Love” With Marilyn Manson, Jamie Bell Was “Love of My Life”

Evan Rachel Wood on Marilyn Manson Relationship
Evan Rachel Wood opened up about her controversial relationship with former fiancé Marilyn Manson: "I thought I was in love," she said, adding that ex-husband Jamie Bell was the "love of my life."

Love and controversy — in retrospect. An older and wiser Evan Rachel Wood looked back at her controversial relationship with Marilyn Manson in a brand-new interview with Net-A-Porter.com’s The EDIT on Thursday, Aug. 20.

“I thought I was in love,” the Strange Magic actress said of her relationship, which kicked off in 2006, when she was just 19 and he was 36. “I wasn’t doing it to prove a point or be rebellious. I wanted to break a mold for sure — I knew I was edgier, more alternative, and weird. And [Marilyn] was just what I needed, because I felt really free with him. And that freedom was attractive.”

Wood, now 27, recalled how people would label her as a homewrecker during that time. Manson had recently separated from his wife, burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese, when he and Wood got together in 2006.

“People were cruel,” the Mildred Pierce star shared. “You build immunity to that sort of thing, but I wasn’t used to negative feedback, so it got to me. Then I got angry, and pushed away even more.”

The two had an on-again, off-again relationship for four years, and got engaged in January 2010 after Manson proposed onstage in Paris. They split later that year. “I wouldn’t trade any of [our relationship],” Wood told the mag. “I appreciate everything he taught me. I just don’t think we were right for each other.”

Following that romance, the former child star reunited with her ex-boyfriend Jamie Bell, whom she married in October 2012. The couple welcomed their first child together, a baby boy whose name has never been revealed, in July 2013. In May 2014, the Fantastic Four actor and Wood confirmed exclusively to Us Weekly that they were separating.

“Jamie’s lovely,” Wood said of her estranged husband in her latest interview. “He was the love of my life.”

She also opened up about her bisexuality. “I knew it was part of me, but I hadn’t allowed myself to explore it,” Wood dished. “I didn’t realize how crippling it was until I finally opened that door and went, ‘Wow!’”

A few weeks shy of her 28th birthday, the actress said she’s looking forward to moving past her twenties. “I can’t wait! I love getting older,” she gushed. “I feel like your twenties are such a s–t show, I just want to get to 30 and say, ‘I made it!'”

Currently, her plan is to embrace everything. “Life doesn’t give a s–t about your plans,” she noted. “I have these moments where I just want to dance! Part of me says, ‘Don’t, that’s weird, people are going to stare!’ but then there’s this other voice that says, ‘Who gives a s–t? You’re going to die one day. Just dance!'”

And possibly expand her brood in the future. “People say, ‘What about when the baby goes to sleep? But that’s when I’m doing laundry, cleaning the house, answering emails. I pretty much always have a stain on my shirt. That’s my life!” she said of her life as a single mom. “I don’t want to have another baby, but my little sister is adopted, and I was hoping that one day I could do that…There are so many possibilities.”
