The everything shower has taken over TikTok feeds and self-care routines, turning a basic hygiene task into a multi-step ritual that promises softer skin, healthier hair and a mental reset. It’s not exactly new, but it’s having a serious moment and the version that actually delivers results looks a little different from what’s trending. Here’s how the shower routine works, what to do before you step in, and which steps are worth skipping.

What an ‘Everything Shower’ Actually Means

The everything shower is less a single routine and more an umbrella term for a thorough, top-to-toe cleansing session that bundles in the steps you’d usually save for another day. Marie Lodi, writing for Yahoo, describes it this way “For the uninitiated, the everything shower is a comprehensive bathing ritual that includes most everything that could possibly be done whilst cleansing. Regular in-shower steps like body wash, shampoo and conditioner are part of it, alongside steps you might not take every single time you shower, such as exfoliating, shaving head-to-toe or, especially, massaging and treating your scalp.”

Think of it as the shower equivalent of a Sunday reset slower, more intentional and built around a few specific concerns rather than rushed through on autopilot.

Why the Shower Trend Keeps Going Viral

The format took off on TikTok, where users have framed long, layered showers as both grooming and mental-health practice. Victoria Stokes, reporting for Healthline, notes the scale of the trend “While nothing new, the ‘Everything Shower’ has been gaining popularity on TikTok. In fact, the ‘Everything Shower’ hashtag has amassed over 32 million views on the platform in the past month alone, with users saying these time-intensive showers are great for looking after themselves both physically and mentally. Proponents of the trend say these self-care rituals help with everything from stress management and anxiety to low mood. For some, they are an essential part of their weekly wind-down routine and an opportunity to prioritize themselves.”

In other words, the appeal isn’t just clean hair. It’s the act of carving out an hour for yourself in a week that usually doesn’t allow it.

What to Do Before You Turn on the Shower

A lot of what makes an everything shower effective happens before any water hits. Pre-shower prep is where treatments have time to actually sink in, and where the routine separates itself from a regular rinse. The goal is to set up the steps that work better on dry skin and hair and to pick a focus rather than piling on every product you own.

Useful pre-shower steps include

  • Dry brushing
  • Scalp oiling
  • Hair masks
  • Choosing one skin concern to target dryness, KP, body acne or similar

Picking just one skin issue per shower keeps the routine focused. Layering treatments for every concern in a single session is one of the fastest ways to irritate skin and waste product.

The New In-Shower Order That Actually Works

Order matters more than people realize. Washing in the wrong sequence can leave conditioner residue on your back, dry out freshly shaved legs or strip color-treated hair. Brooke Knappenberger, writing for Marie Claire, starts at the top “My everything shower always starts with my hair before I move onto my body. While some give their hair a deep cleanse by double shampooing, I prefer to use a scalp scrub. The gentle exfoliants in a scrub work wonders at removing build-up, dry skin, and excess oil, and I’ve found that they don’t strip my cherry cola hair color.”

A streamlined sequence that works for most routines

  1. Shampoo or scalp treatment
  2. Exfoliate only where needed
  3. Shave, if desired
  4. Apply a treatment cleanser or body wash
  5. Finish with cool water on hair

That final cool rinse helps smooth the hair cuticle, which can reduce frizz and add shine a small step that makes the rest of the routine look more polished.

What to Do the Second You Step Out

The post-shower window is short, and it’s where a lot of hydration gets lost. Skin is most receptive when it’s still damp, so the goal is to move quickly rather than scroll your phone wrapped in a towel.

Right after toweling off

  • Apply body lotion or oil immediately while skin is still damp
  • This helps seal in hydration instead of letting product sit on top of dry skin
  • This step is especially important for body serums, retinol lotions and KP treatments

Hair care post-shower

Hair needs its own short routine once you’re out. A few steps protect the work you just did in the shower

  • Microfiber towel or T-shirt drying to reduce frizz
  • Leave-in conditioner or bond repair treatment
  • Scalp serum or light oil on ends only
  • Heat protectant before styling non-negotiable if you’re using heat tools

Shower Steps Worth Skipping

The biggest mistake people make with the everything shower is treating “everything” literally. More steps don’t equal better results, and some popular add-ons can actively work against your skin and hair.

Steps to leave out of your routine

  • Multiple scrubs in one shower
  • Daily shaving if it irritates your skin
  • Layering too many active ingredients
  • Washing hair more than necessary
  • Using products simply because they’re trending

The version of the everything shower that actually delivers isn’t the longest one. It’s the one built around your skin, your hair and the one or two things you actually want to improve this week.
