And he’s out! Jason Jones announced on Twitter on Tuesday, Feb. 24, that he’s leaving The Daily Show after nearly 10 years as a correspondent on the Comedy Central show.
"For 9 & 1/2 years, I have worked at one of the greatest TV shows of all time. But…It is time for me to go," Jones tweeted on Tuesday. "That said, I am ecstatic to announce that I'm about to make another great show over @tbsveryfunny."
Jones and his wife, fellow Daily Show correspondent Samantha Bee, are both set to serve as executive producers on an untitled comedy about a family who embark on a road trip to Florida that quickly goes awry. The couple has been granted a 10-episode order from TBS for the sitcom.
The news of Jones’ exit comes after host Jon Stewart announced he’ll be leaving the show after 16 years. "For the better part of the last two decades, I have had the incredible honor and privilege of working with Jon Stewart. His comedic brilliance is second to none," Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless told Us in a statement on Feb. 10. "Jon has been at the heart of Comedy Central, championing and nurturing the best talent in the industry, in front of and behind the camera," the statement continued. "Through his unique voice and vision, The Daily Show has become a cultural touchstone for millions of fans and an unparalleled platform for political comedy that will endure for years to come."
Stewart himself choked up during a taping announcing his departure that night, telling the audience: "Doug Herzog and Michele Ganeless of Comedy Central gave me an incredible opportunity 17 years ago to pilot this wonderful franchise… 17 years is the longest I have ever in my life held a job by 16 years and five months… In my heart I know, it is time for someone else to have that opportunity."
Aside from appearing on The Daily Show, Jones has also appeared in comedies Pitch Perfect and The Switch.
