New photos of Jim Carrey and his late girlfriend, Cathriona White, celebrating Valentine’s Day together have surfaced amid a wrongful death lawsuit filed by White’s estranged husband, Mark Burton.
The images, which Us Weekly recently obtained, show the couple kissing against a backdrop of bright twinkling lights just one month after White tied the knot with Burton in January 2013. Other photos in the collection show Carrey, 54, and White gazing lovingly at each other across a flower-and-candle laden table.
One picture shows a giant pink box of chocolates and a teddy bear, along with a card with the words “White Cat” (White’s nickname) written across the front.
In September, Burton hit Carrey with a wrongful death lawsuit, claiming that the actor had a hand in White’s September 2015 drug overdose at the age of 30. White and Carrey had been dating on and off at the time of her death.
“The undisputed fact is that Mark Burton had a sham marriage and is a ‘green card’ husband, and the Valentine’s Day photos prove it,” Carrey’s lawyer Martin D. Singer told Us in a statement on Saturday, October 1. “The photos were taken less than 30 days after the Vegas ‘wedding.’ [Burton’s lawyer] Mr. Avenatti’s statements are defamatory. He is trying to deflect from the fact that his client has no right to sue by sending to the media carefully edited texts with significant redactions.”
“What a shame. It would be easy for me to get back in a room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away, but there are moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world,” Carrey told Us Weekly in a statement in reference to Burton’s claims. “I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved.”
“Cat’s troubles were born long before I met her, and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone’s control,” he continued. “I really hope someday soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace.”
TMZ reported in July that White wrote about her breakup with Carrey in the suicide note she left behind, writing, “I’ve spent 3 days now in disbelief that you’re not here. I can go on brokenhearted and try to put the pieces back. I could, I just don’t have the will this time. I’m sorry you felt I wasn’t there for you. I tried to give you my best part.”
“I don’t really know about burial or that sort of thing. You are my family so whatever you choose will be fine,” she continued. “Please forgive me. I’m just not for this world.”
