Joan Rivers’ Endoscopy Clinic, Yorkville Endoscopy, Denies Performing Throat Biopsy on Late Comedienne

The clinic Joan Rivers visited prior to her ultimately fatal hospitalization has denied reports that they performed an unplanned throat biopsy during a routine endoscopy on the beloved comedienne.

In a statement released to TheWrap on Wednesday, Sept. 10, Yorkville Endoscopy clinic said "a biopsy of the vocal cords has never been performed at Yorkville Endoscopy."

"General anesthesia has never been administered at Yorkville Endoscopy," the statement continued without ever mentioning Rivers' name due to confidentiality rules. "The type of sedation used at Yorkville Endoscopy is monitored anesthesia care. Our anesthesiologists utilize light to moderate sedation."

The statement comes after the New York Daily News reported that the late Fashion Police host had brought with her to the New York clinic another doctor who "asked if he could use their instruments" to perform a throat biopsy during what was supposed to be "a diagnostic procedure [to] see why her voice had gotten raspy." 

As previously confirmed, during the procedure, Rivers stopped breathing and was rushed to the hospital, where she was put in a medically-induced coma and on life support. Rivers, 81, died almost a week later on Sept. 4.

An initial autopsy performed on Rivers was inconclusive, failing to determine the "cause and manner of death."
