It’s a Depp-eat-dog world! Johnny Depp is ready to laugh again after getting in trouble for sneaking his dogs into Australia back in May. The Black Mass actor joked on Friday, Sept. 4, that he, um, got rid of his two Yorkshire terriers, Boo and Pistol, following the incident.
“I killed my dogs and ate them under direct orders from some kind of, I don’t know, sweaty, big-gutted man from Australia,” Depp, 52, slyly said during a press conference for Black Mass at the Venice Film Festival.
As previously reported, Depp and his wife, Amber Heard, were ordered to send their furry friends back to the U.S. from Australia after illegally traveling with them on his private jet. Australia’s agriculture minister, Barnaby Joyce, threatened to euthanize the dogs if Depp refused to do so.
“He has decided to bring to our nation two dogs without actually getting proper certification and the proper permits required,” Joyce told reporters at the time. ”Basically, it looks like he snuck them in. We found out he snuck them in because we saw him taking them to a poodle groomer.”
The headache didn’t end there though. In July, Heard, 29, got into more hot water for illegally bringing Boo and Pistol back into the country. The actress was in town to be with Depp as he finished filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. She was summoned, and if charged, can face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $75,000. The case is still ongoing.
