Say it isn’t so! Kailyn Lowry and her husband, Javi Marroquin, have one of our favorite love stories on Teen Mom 2. But not everything is bliss for the reality star couple.
In fact, the pair have been seriously working on their marriage, a story line that will be featured when Season 6 of the MTV series premieres on Thursday, July 9. During a recent press tour to NYC, Lowry, 23, opened up to Us Weekly about her marital struggles with Marroquin, 22, after tying the knot in fall 2013.
“I think Javi and I went through a really rough patch that started right before we started filming the season,” Lowry explained to Us. “But ultimately we made it through.”
Much of their troubles had to do with the family of four’s recent move to Delaware. Lowry admitted that resentment started to build between the two when she was stuck at home with their son Lincoln, 20 months, and her son Isaac, 5, from a previous relationship.
“I just think it was trying to get on the same parenting page with Lincoln, and Lincoln was probably only 6 months old [at the time],” she clarified. “And I think it was easier for me to make friends in Delaware, because I would go to my breastfeeding support group, CrossFit, stuff like that. And for him, he’s at work all day. So I think that’s, it really was taking a toll on him at that time.”
At one point, Marroquin even accused her of cheating after he saw her texting with a classmate about school. The blow-up fight was documented for viewers to see in the premiere, and (spoiler alert) it didn’t go well.
“I’ve never given him a reason to be that way,” Lowry said, reflecting on the incident. “But again, I go to college, so I’m around people my age and stuff. Javi doesn’t go to school with me, it was hard for him to see my friendships. And so I think that’s what really set him off.”
That smile on my son's face obviously wasn't posed, that's for sure. And I don't give this man enough credit for being a second father figure for Isaac. From DAY ONE he has accepted Isaac and treated him as if he was his own despite the fact that he had never even really been around children. Looking through my camera roll and in tears at how lucky I am to have my husband for my boys. @javim9 will always be Isaac's best soccer coach ??, world's best "other daddy" as Isaac calls him, dad for Lincoln and #1 husband. Thank you for EVERYTHING you do for this family. #memorialdayweekend #family
Tensions built up so much that eventually Lowry admitted she considered divorce.
“There was a point where I was like, ‘You’re going to go to work one day and me and the kids are going to be gone,’” she recalled saying to her husband. “But I think there was a turning point when his mom and his sister sat him down, and they sat him down and they were just like, ‘This is what it is. We’re surprised that she hasn’t left you,’ kind of deal. So when I came home one day, he was just completely different and I was like, this is really weird. Like I don’t know how one conversation could change it. And he was like, ‘My mom and my sister put it in perspective for me. You’re not being crazy.’ So I was kind of happy that he acknowledged it. I mean, it obviously takes two, I was a part of it. But there was a point where I think he was contributing more to the arguing.”
Lowry and Marroquin are still going strong, and he even accompanied her to NYC for the press tour. In addition to posting cute selfies together via Instagram, she also shared a recent shot of Marroquin with Isaac, writing, “I don't give this man enough credit for being a second father figure for Isaac. From DAY ONE he has accepted Isaac and treated him as if he was his own despite the fact that he had never even really been around children. Looking through my camera roll and in tears at how lucky I am to have my husband for my boys”
