Lamar Odom, who was found unconscious at a Nevada brothel on Tuesday, Oct. 13, and his ex-wife, Khloe Kardashian, dealt with a complicated relationship before and after their split in December 2013. As confirmed by Us Weekly, Kardashian rushed to be by Odom's side on Tuesday after he was transferred to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. One source told Us that Kardashian has been "inconsolable" as her ex-husband remains in critical condition.
Here, Us takes a look back at their complex history.
The former Los Angeles Lakers player and the reality star married in 2009, just one month after they started dating. Kardashian and Odom first met in August 2009, at a party for his Lakers teammate Ron Artest. The stars even had their own reality show, Khloe & Lamar, which seemingly started off as a picturesque romance. Odom's personal troubles, however, eventually surfaced.
During their union, there were spurts of time when Odom, now 35, would vanish as he struggled with his personal demons including substance abuse issues. A friend close to the couple told Us in August 2013 that Kardashian desperately wanted to save Odom. "The addiction had taken over their marriage," the pal told Us. "The problem is cocaine. He would be high for three or four days at a time."
Finally, after four years of marriage, reality star Kardashian, now age 31, filed for divorce in December 2013. The reason for the breakup was largely due to her husband's continual struggles with substance abuse, despite his attempts at cleaning up.
"She flip-flopped several times," a source told Us at the time. "But she can't imagine having kids with someone who refuses to seek help for his disease."
After the demise of her marriage, Kardashian moved on in May 2014 with "Cocaine Mafia" rapper French Montana. The pair were seen living lavishly during their high-profile romance, including spending a summer together in the posh Hamptons outside NYC, which was also the setting for Kardashian's spinoff with her oldest sister Kourtney, E!'s Kourtney & Khloe Take the Hamptons. Montana and Kardashian dated on-and-off-again for eight months and later reconciled, only to split for good in December 2014.
In October 2014, Us Weekly exclusively reported that Kardashian couldn't "get in touch" with Odom to finalize their divorce nearly a year later, according to one insider. Added another source: "He refuses to sign the divorce papers."
In December 2014, Kardashian revealed on an episode of Kourtney & Khloe Take the Hamptons that her relationship with French Montana was rushed. "It's nothing against French. I just think I don't want a boyfriend," she explained on the episode. "I jumped into something because I was just, like, lonely and destructive. But now I'm like, I just want to be alone… I gotta grieve. I'm still married."
BETTER AFTER BREAKUP
Following her split from Odom, Kardashian vigilantly started working out to help channel her energy into something positive. Indeed, Kardashian told Cosmo Body in April 2015 that she lost 20 pounds — and attributed her spit as the catalyst behind her physical transformation. "When me and Lamar were having issues, I decided to channel my energy into working out…if I went out with my girlfriends I would be hounded by paparazzi and made to feel more humiliated,” she told the mag. “The gym was my only refuge. I could put music on and dance around with my girlfriends and be silly."
In June 2015, Odom tragically lost two of his closest friends, Jamie Sangouthai and Bobby Heyward, to drug overdoses — both in the same week. A source told Us at the time of Sangouthai's death that Odom was "beside himself" and "so sad." Added the insider: "They were best friends, like brothers. Lamar is going to take this really hard."
Kardashian, during Odom's time of grieving, continued to check in with her ex. "She's been a major support for him," one insider told Us of the KUWTK star. "They talk all day long and she calls almost every hour to check in on him."
SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED
Nearly two years after their separation, Kardashian and Odom took the official legal steps to end their marriage in July 2015. "They saw each other when she was in Vegas and both signed the divorce documents together," an insider told Us at the time. However, it wasn't without heartbreak.
"Lamar was really hurt and felt like Khloe had no respect for him after she was out in public with James Harden," the source told Us. "He just kept seeing her with different guys and that was it for him. French was at least a relationship but here she was with another guy."
After signing her divorce papers, Kardashian was ambushed in August 2015 by Odom while making her way into an early morning SoulCycle class in Beverly Hills. Sources told Us at the time that Kardashian was walking into her 6:45 a.m. spin workout when Odom came out of nowhere and attempted to talk to her. At one point, he touched her arm which prompted Kardashian to yell: "Get off of me, get off of me. Stop. Stop." At the time, several bystanders had to intervene.
Meanwhile, Odom subsequently denied that any harassment took place. He even claimed that Kardashian arranged for him to meet up with her at the class that morning. "I am not, not, not the person that they're trying to make me out to be," an emotional Odom told TMZ days later. "I live in Las Vegas. So was there an address or a place given, or I just guessed right? Did I just guess right where this girl may be? I know Khloe, so how would you think I ended up there?"
HEART ON HER SLEEVE
Despite the crazy incident, a reflective Kardashian bared her soul about Odom and their complicated relationship in the August/September 2015 issue of Complex. "I talked to Lamar this morning," Kardashian told the mag. "I talk to Lamar as often as I can, which is inconsistent, but not on my terms."
"When you genuinely feel like that was the right relationship, you’re supposed to give it all you can. That’s what marriage is about," she continued. "It’s not, 'Let’s see if it works, if not we always have divorce.' I am not one of those girls. You took a vow before God and you’re supposed to abide by that. I’m not rushing into my divorce because I’m not looking to get married tomorrow, so I don’t have a deadline. I’m not rushing it. So when it’s time and it’s supposed to happen, it will."
In an October 2015 episode of KUWTK, it was revealed that older sister Kim, specifically, disapproved of Khloe maintaining contact with Odom. Khloe was on the phone with her ex-husband when Kim stepped into the room. “Kim, Lamar says hi,” Khloe told her big sibling with a smile. “He says please tell Kanye and North he says hi… Kim is staring at me, I have to go."
Later, Kim expressed concern about how Khloe was handling her split. "I don’t know why Khloe and Lamar are talking, but he hurt her so badly,” Kanye West's wife said in a confessional. “As a big sister, I’m protective. For her to just be flirting with him on the phone makes me sick to my stomach.”
TOGETHER AFTER TRAGEDY
Khloe rushed to be by Odom's side in October 2015 after the basketball player was found unconscious in a brothel. A source close to the reality star told Us that she was "inconsolable." It was also reported that Kim and mom Kris Jenner were also with Khloe at Sunrise Hospital in Vegas, where Odom remains in critical condition.
