One day at a time. She called him "the best friend I've ever had in my life," so Kim Richards was understandably emotional when she discussed the recent death of her ex-husband Monty Brinson in a new interview on Tuesday, March 1.

The former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star told Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday that she was by Brinson's side as he drew his last breath on January 24 after a long battle with cancer. He was 58.

"He was glad that he was going first cause he didn't think he could bear it if it were me and then he had to be left here," she said.

The pair were married for three years and had a daughter, Brooke, before divorcing in 1988, but remained close and even lived together last year as his health deteriorated.

Richards, 51, was emotional as she recounted the last words she said to her ex, who was an heir to a supermarket franchise.

"I said 'I love you,' and then I felt him just kind of leave, and it was shocking," she said. "I just didn't expect it."

The former child star has struggled with her sobriety, and Brinson was supportive, even defending her last year after she was arrested twice and entered rehab for the fourth time.

Now sober, she told ET, "My recovery is going amazing."

Richards, who left RHOBH last year, is making a guest appearance on the show on Tuesday to sit down with her sister Kyle Richards. The two have been at odds since Kim's friendship with fellow RHOBH alum Brandi Glanville grew stronger.

Kim is also starring alongside her daughter Kimberly Jackson, 20, in a new Lifetime reality series, The Mother/Daughter Experiment: Celebrity Edition, which premieres on Tuesday at 10 p.m. EST.
