Flashback to her Twilight days! Kristen Stewart reminisced about her highly scrutinized, five-year relationship with Robert Pattinson, and opened up about her girlfriend, Alicia Cargile.
“People wanted me and Rob to be together so badly that our relationship was made into a product,” the 26-year-old actress said of dating her Twilight love interest off screen during an interview with T Magazine. “It wasn’t real life anymore. And that was gross to me. It’s not that I want to hide who I am or hide anything I’m doing in my life. It’s that I don’t want to become a part of a story for entertainment value.”
Stewart made headlines after Us Weekly exclusively published photos of her kissing her married Snow White & the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders, while she was dating Pattinson in July 2012. The couple gave their love another try, but called it quits for good in 2013.
“I do think that’s because of the storms I have weathered. It’s not that they make you stronger or calloused — but they do make you a human,” she said of all the attention that came with her celeb status and relationships.
The Equals actress used to keep her personal life ultra private, but she’s recently been more open about her love life and her sexuality. “I would never talk about any of my relationships before, but once I started dating girls it seemed like there was an opportunity to represent something really positive,” she said. “I still want to protect my personal life, but I don’t want to seem like I’m protecting the idea, so that does sort of feel like I owe something to people.”
Stewart has been dating visual-effects producer Cargile on and off for the past three years, and hasn’t been shy about showing PDA for the cameras. “I love her so much,” she said, scrolling through photos of the couple during the T Magazine interview. “Look how cute she is.”
The American Ultra star now grapples with how much to share with the world. “How do you feel like you’re not being stolen from, yet at the same time not guard yourself to the point of depriving yourself of so much goodness in life?” she said of her past “physical anxiety” and sleepless nights over the issue. “Nothing killed me. I was skinny as hell, I looked crazy, but I was fine. I now have faith in my body to carry on, and that has made me a better actor.”
