Lisa Rinna took a trip down memory lane while mourning the loss of Patrick Muldoon following his death on Sunday, April 19.
Rinna, 62, shared a throwback photo from their Days of Our Lives era via her Instagram Story on Monday, April 20, as tribute to Muldoon, who suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 57.
She added a broken-heart emoji to signify his tragic death after the pair played sister and brother on the soap opera in the early 1990s.
In the photo, which appeared to be a promotional picture for the show, Rinna wore an off-the-shoulder top and high-waisted black jeans as she sat back-to-back with Muldoon. The actor was all smiles as he sat beside Rinna wearing a blue tee, jean jacket and light-washed jeans.
Rinna’s short but sweet tribute came decades after she and Muldoon had a brief fling while filming Days of Our Lives — prior to her romance with now-husband Harry Hamlin. (Rinna and Hamlin, 74, tied the knot in 1997.)
Rinna recalled their hookup in a July 2021 episode of the “People in the 90s” podcast while opening up about her most “surreal” moment from the decade.
“Having an affair with the guy who played my brother,” she told hosts Andrea Lavinthal and Jason Sheeler before clarifying, “Well, not an affair, but a couple of one-night stands with the guy who [played] my brother. Patrick Muldoon and I had, like, a thing.”
While their romance off screen was short, fans of Days of Our Lives will always remember Rinna and Muldoon for their onscreen performances as siblings Billie and Austin Reed, respectively.
The pair portrayed their characters on the soap from 1992 to 1995. Both Rinna and Muldoon went on to reprise their roles several times over the next few decades. Rinna’s most recent appearance came with a multiple-episode arc in 2018.
Muldoon, meanwhile, returned in 2012 for more than 30 episodes.
Outside of Days of Our Lives, Muldoon’s path crossed with Rinna’s when they both starred on Melrose Place in the mid-’90s.
Muldoon made his debut on the hit series in 1995 during season 3 and played Richard Hart through the beginning of season 5 in 1996.
Rinna, for her part, joined the cast during season 5 as Taylor McBride. The former castmates shared the screen for three episodes that season. Rinna continued to play Taylor through season 7 in 1998.
Nearly 30 years later, Rinna is among Muldoon’s many celebrity friends and former castmates mourning his sudden death.
Muldoon’s manager confirmed his death on Sunday. His sister, Shana Muldoon-Zappa, later told TMZ that the actor had been taking a shower when his girlfriend, Miriam Rothbart, found him unconscious on the bathroom floor following a heart attack. Paramedics were unable to revive him at the scene.
“[Patrick was] endlessly generous — with his poetry, his humor and his unmistakable presence,” Muldoon’s friends told Deadline in a statement on Monday. “[Patrick] loved animals and people alike, gave unforgettable hugs and possessed a rare quality of making others feel safe and seen. Stylish, charismatic and full of life, he embraced each day with a full-tilt, rock ’n’ roll spirit.”
Alison Sweeney, who worked with Muldoon on Days of Our Lives, paid tribute to her former costar via X, calling the late star “a rare kind of person — brilliantly talented, endlessly kind, and generous in spirit.”
She noted, “He brought his unique charm and humor to work every day. A truly gifted guy, and one who will be profoundly missed.”
