Talk about an unlikely fan! Michael Moore may be known for his critically acclaimed documentaries and tackling more serious fare, but the filmmaker revealed in a recent New York Film Festival discussion that he has a reality show guilty pleasure: The Bachelorette.
Moore, 61, was in the middle of bemoaning the lesser status nonfiction works have in the film world when he noted that nonfiction “reality” TV has such a big part in American culture.
“Americans love nonfiction [TV] — some of the shows suck, like So You Wanna Dance With the Stars, and some of them are 60 Minutes,” he told the audience, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
But the Bowling for Columbine director’s personal favorite?
“I always watch the first night of The Bachelorette!” he exclaimed, detailing his very specific viewing strategy.
“I drop in to see what my take is on them trying to suss out who they want to get married to. … I like to try and pick who I see will be in the final 10, because then I don’t watch it for another 10 weeks, and then I come back to see.”
Asked about Season 11’s twist, which involved two initial Bachelorettes, Moore said that he was unfazed.
“The first night, they decided to have two Bachelorettes, so which one is it gonna be: her or the Canadian? That’s how I separated [Britt Nilsson and Kaitlyn Bristowe],” he said. “Halfway through the [episode], I thought, ‘It’s gonna be the Canadian,’ and she ended up being it.”
Moore’s next documentary, Where to Invade Next, will open nationwide on Jan. 15.
