The ladies of Litchfield took over late night! Key cast members from Orange Is the New Black, including Taylor Schilling, Natasha Lyonne, Laverne Cox, Jason Biggs, Uzo Aduba, Lea DeLaria and Kate Mulgrew, stopped by Conan on Monday, Aug. 4, for their first late-night interview as a group.
The episode kicked off with O’Brien getting his hair done by Cox, 30, clad in her best Sophia Burset jumpsuit. Serving her signature tell-it-like-it-is sass, she confronts the late night talk show host about his coif.
“You need to understand that you are turning off a huge segment of the demographic that you could be reaching. People are afraid of clowns! I’m scared just looking at you!”
When Cox finishes fixing up O’Brien, the camera zooms away to show his sidekick, Andy Richter, in a red spiky wig a la Red, telling him that he looks “absolutely ridiculous” in a Russian accent.
After the hilarious OITNB-style opening credits, other highlights included Aduba teaching O’Brien how to achieve her famous “crazy eyes.”
“Make your eyes really big and think about something that you love,” the Emmy-nominated actress dished. When O’Brien tried to copy her expression, his came off more awkward than crazed.
Mulgrew didn’t come on with any lessons, but with a score to settle instead. When the 59-year-old veteran actress was a guest on Late Night With Conan O’Brien promoting Star Trek: Voyager 15 years ago, he had her show off her special talent.
“Fifteen years ago you almost destroyed my career. In front of millions, you forced me to perform an Irish jig!”
As payback, Mulgrew pushed O’Brien to perform a makeshift Irish jig of his own. “Now it’s your time to pay. Get up and do the dance,” she said in character as Red, menacing Russian accent and all.
