Cobain died at the age of 27 on April 5, 1994. The Nirvana frontman was found dead three days later in the Seattle home he shared with wife Courtney Love and their now-23-year-old daughter, Frances Bean. His death was ruled a suicide, but conspiracy theorists have long thought otherwise.

The images of a detective holding the Remington shotgun Cobain used to take his own life were released in response to CBS News‘ public records act request.

The outlet wanted to “dispel a rumor … that the shotgun had been melted down to hide evidence in a supposed … cover-up of a potential murder.”

These pictures are the latest addition to a gallery that is available to view on the Seattle Police Department’s official website. On the 20th anniversary of Cobain’s death, in 2014, police released crime-scene photos of the late rocker’s personal belongings, including his driver’s license, syringes, cigarettes, a lighter and various other items.

CNN reports that conspiracy theorist Richard Lee filed a lawsuit pushing for images of Cobain’s body to be released, but Love, 51, and Frances Bean are fighting his request as they believe the photos would only “encourage more disturbed stalkers and fanatical threats.”
