No can deny that Anne Hathaway is a woman of her word.
“‘Breaking News: As Promised, Anne Hathaway Vanishes Into a Plume of Smoke,’” a fictional headline shared to the pregnant actress’ Instagram account on Friday, October 2, read as she prepares to welcome her third baby with husband Adam Shulman.
In a follow-up clip, the pregnant actress, 43, sat in a chair while getting her makeup done.
“So, we’re heading out to the Verity premiere,” Hathaway said, rubbing her baby bump. “Verity comes out in theaters Friday, October 2, and then, on October 3 …”
Before Hathaway could finish her thought, she disappeared from the screen as a graphic of a gray cloud took her place. Hathaway’s stylist, Erin Walsh, subsequently walked into the frame, asking, “Where the f*** is she?”
Hathaway previously announced she would be taking a step back from the limelight once Verity hit theaters.
“The movie comes out on October 2, and October 3, I’m going to vanish in a plume of smoke, and you’re not gonna see me until you have to,” Hathaway told Entertainment Tonight in September. “I’m definitely gonna disappear and take some time off.”
Before Verity, the Oscar winner starred in four other big-screen releases this year: Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey and The End of Oak Street. While promoting her respective films, Hathaway announced in June that she is expecting her third baby with Shulman, 45. (The couple also share sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6.)
During her seemingly endless press tours, Hathaway joked that her unborn baby is a “buzzer beater” due to her advanced maternal age.
“There’s always hope until there’s not, but when you get to a certain age, that hope looks like it’s 1 percent to 2 percent,” she told Access Hollywood in July of conceiving in her 40s. “We just decided to see where life took us with a very, very healthy, realistic expectation, which was very low.”
She continued at the time, “We’re overjoyed because we just know from personal experience that not everybody gets this, and certainly not when you want it — sometimes not ever. It’s a blessing that we do not take for granted.”
Hathaway has previously been candid about her fertility journey.
“The first time it didn’t work out for me. I was doing a play and I had to give birth onstage every night,” she told Vanity Fair in 2024, revealing that she suffered a miscarriage while playing a pregnant character in the 2015 off-Broadway play Grounded. “It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine.”
According to Hathaway, she wanted to “keep it real” with her fans and publicly shared her rainbow baby news.
“When it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it — where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone — I wanted to let my sisters know, ‘You don’t have to always be graceful. I see you and I’m with you,’” she added. “It’s really hard to want something so much and to wonder if you’re doing something wrong.”
