Pretty Little Liars Author Sara Shepard Doesn’t Even Know Final Outcome of Show

No secrets here! While ABC Family’s smash teen show Pretty Little Liars continues to spin drama and intrigue in its current fifth season, the author of the show’s source material, Sara Shepard, is telling a different story in the 16th edition of the Pretty Little Liars YA series. Shepard, whose new book Vicious: A Pretty Little Liars Novel debuted Dec. 4, said, during a HuffPost Live appearance, that while the TV show looks to her material here and there, she’s mostly clueless as to their “end game.”

Shepard, 37, wrote the first eight books in the Pretty Little Liars series before the ABC Family show even premiered.

“I was really happy that the pilot episode followed the first book start to finish, I mean, Marlene King [PLL showrunner], she used lines from the books, it was amazing, and then things kinda just went,” revealed the Pittsburgh, PA native.

Shepard, who also writes The Lying Game book series, said that the TV program’s writers still occasionally use plotlines and quotes from her books, but she understands that “some things work better for books than they do for TV, and some things work better for TV than they do for a book.”

Despite that, the author said she’s generally out of the loop with the show’s plotline, and she doesn’t think “their end game is the same as mine.”

“I know that they read the books, and I know that they probably read them before plotting out their next [episode], but at this point, it is its own thing, it is its own crazy world, and it was born out of my crazy world,” she said.

ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” stars Lucy Hale as Aria Montgomery, Shay Mitchell as Emily Fields, Troian Bellisario as Spencer Hastings and Ashley Benson as Hanna Marin.

As for “A” and what’s to come in Rosewood, Shepard says she “really, really [doesn’t] know.” Despite a hunch, she chooses not to ask King the plotline.

“When I was on the set a couple months ago, I was talking to a couple of the actors and I think they had gotten some hints about the big master plan of the show, and I was like ‘please please do not tell me,'” Shepard said.
