And the fallout continues. On Friday, Sept. 18, three more advertisers announced their decision to suspend their advertisements from ABC’s The View following the hosts’ controversial comments about Miss Colorado and her monologue about nurses during the Miss America pageant on Sunday, Sept. 13.
Snuggle, McCormick, and Party City are now also cutting ties with the daytime talk show — at least temporarily. They join the likes of big-brand advertisers like Johnson & Johnson and Eggland’s Best, who pulled the plug on their ads on Thursday.
“Please join us in thanking and celebrating nurses for the critical role they play in our healthcare system,” Snuggle said in a statement.
On Thursday, Sept. 17, Joy Behar looked contrite as she announced that she and her fellow View co-hosts wanted to make amends for their comments by inviting “dedicated professionals from NYU College of Nursing to share firsthand what these hard-working nurses do on a daily basis.”
“We apologize about our remarks and we know how important nurses are,” the 72-year-old talk show host said.
Behar and her fellow co-hosts caused a stir online on Monday, Sept. 14, after they made disparaging comments about Miss Colorado Kelley Johnson’s monologue about nursing for the talent portion of the competition.
“Why does she have a doctor’s stethoscope on?” Behar said at one point, unimpressed.
The hashtag “NursesUnite” quickly circulated the web, with backlash coming from organizations like the American Nurses Association.
"We are the frontline caregivers, 24 hours, 7 days a week, who are with individuals from birth, throughout their lifespan and at the end of life,” the organization’s president, Pamela F. Cipriano, said in a statement Monday. “That's why it was disturbing when Joy Behar used her national platform and influence to mock Miss America contestant Kelley Johnson for wearing a 'doctor's stethoscope' while performing a dramatic monologue about her experience as a registered nurse during the pageant's talent competition, as if Johnson were wearing a costume."
