The humidity level reached 87 percent in Truro, England, on July 23. But apparently two female employees at a local Superdrug thought their customers ought to cover up.
According to a now-viral Facebook post, a woman named Harriet Rae was shopping at the health-and-beauty retailer when she overheard two women making snide remarks about her outfit.
“Don’t worry, I heard the comments you made to each other about my appearance and my shorts,” Rae wrote on Saturday, July 23. “You spoke loud enough for most people to hear. It’s obviously not the first time you’ve had a giggle and made comments about another girl, but when you do it normally, the person you talk about probably looks away and you actually make them feel really sad inside. But today, by the looks on your faces you weren’t prepared for the massive cheesy smile I gave you!”
Rae revealed that while their words and judgmental looks didn’t hurt her, she worried about their next victim — and urged them to be kinder. “Some people’s skin isn’t as thick as mine has become and the next person’s might be very thin indeed,” she wrote.
Then, in a twist, Rae revealed she was going to “send back some love,” and paid both of the women compliments. “If you did your own hair and make up for work today, you are both very talented,” she wrote. “I could never get my winged liner or my ponytail that perfect! #makelovenotwar #girlpower.”
The post has been shared more than 55,000 times.
In an update on July 25, Rae wrote: “I have spoken to the lovely people at Superdrug Head Office today … I reenforced that the intended message of the post was to spread kindness and positivity not embarrassment or hurt. They understood and accepted that I didn’t want to give a description of the people or my location in the store when it happened.”
She continued: “They have also said that my post will be used in training in the future to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
