In a new interview with Cosmo on Campus, Vanessa Hudgens says her High School Musical costar and BFF Ashley Tisdale is "quite protective" of her

Vanessa Hudgens is lucky to have Ashley Tisdale in her corner. The former costars, who became friends after meeting on the set of the smash Disney TV movie High School Musical in 2006, have been through a lot together in the last seven years — and Tisdale, 28, has grown "quite protective" of her pal.

"Ashley always says she wants me to be more cautious," Hudgens, 24, tells British Cosmo on Campus in a new interview for its Autumn Term 2013 issue. "She thinks I'm too trusting. I think I'm fine the way I am, but she thinks I have a tendency to float around on a cloud, which I kind of do. She's quite protective — she always has my back."

It goes both ways, of course. "Ashley and I have laughed and cried together over the years. She comes to me for relationship advice more than I go to her, though; I try to figure stuff out by myself," the Spring Breakers star (dating The Carrie Diaries' Austin Butler) admits.

Her go-to cure for heartache, she says, is a night out with her girls. "When a girlfriend is going through a breakup, you have to go out and dance," she explains. "With your best friends, you've got to be there for them no matter what. I love taking my girlfriends away from their worries and enjoying life with them."

She continues: "If there's a problem, a bottle of wine goes a long way. It's the same after a long week of filming — a glass of wine and a bit of chocolate makes me happy."

That's about as wild as she gets, though. "I stay away from [drugs] because I know it's smart to steer clear," she tells the mag.

"I have never liked 'partying,'" she confesses. "I love dancing, but that's as far as it goes. It's tough because a lot of clubs are everything I loathe, especially in L.A. They're always very ego-filled and people get up to mischief. It's just not a pure environment."

The scene she's really interested in, she says, is the college scene. "I got into acting young and I wasn't as fascinated with learning as I am now," she explains. "The older I get, the more curious I become. I'd like to study film or photography one day."
