Jessie James Decker and her husband, Eric Decker, may seem like they have it all, but their relationship wasn’t always picture-perfect.
The 30-year-old country music singer, who wed the former NFL star in 2013, opened up about how they met and their first impressions of one another in her new book, Just Jessie. The pair are parents of daughter Vivianne, 4, and sons Eric II, 3, and 7-month-old Forrest.

One day after getting her heart broken by “the only guy who ever ghosted [her],” Jessie’s friend Liana texted her about her boyfriend’s friend, Eric. “She showed him pictures of me, and he apparently was familiar with who I was from my song, ‘I Look So Good (Without You),’ because it had been a hit in his home state of Minnesota,” Jessie writes in her memoir.

“I wouldn’t call it game playing. I’d call it common sense …. I made Eric hunt for me,” Jessie admits in her book. “I never texted, called or anything-ed him first. I’m not kidding. For the first three months of our relationship, he never got an incoming call from me.”

While Jessie says Eric “kept coming at [her],” he didn’t know how to “court her.” The “Lights Down Low” crooner explains the former football pro was “raised to go dutch” because he only had one girlfriend, whom he dated throughout and immediately after high school. “The first time we went out to dinner, I pulled out my credit card at the end — just for show — and he gave it to the waiter along with his card!” she writes. “We went out a few more times, and the same thing happened again and again. … Then I snapped out of it. He was an NFL player; he wasn’t broke.” Jessie then confronted Eric about the situation, explained she was “from the South,” and they “never went dutch again.” (She also admits he was “embarrassed” at the time.)

Jessie reveals in her book that getting a dog together helped her know Eric would be a good dad. “That’s one of my best pieces of advice to women — if you can, get a dog with your guy before you have children. It’ll tell you so much about if he really is a caretaker.”

Eric wanted to propose to Jessie in their hotel room in Las Vegas when they were there for the Academy of Country Music Awards. After the ring was nowhere to be found in their breakfast room service dishes (he prearranged with her manager for it to be under a plate cover) he panicked. Moments later, the waiter knocked on the door with the ring and he got down on one knee by the door. “The proposal wasn’t how I imagined it going down, but in a way it was very much us,” Eric writes in his brief section of the book. “Messy and not always the way we planned. But it always works out for us.”

Jessie reveals that Eric was “nervous” about filming their E! reality show, Eric & Jessie: Game On. While she convinced him it was a good idea for their careers, it wasn’t always smooth sailing. “At one point, two of the producers were trying to manipulate us with the questions — so I had them fired … during my interview, this producer tried to provoke me into acting jealous about my future husband’s career!” she writes, claiming he asked her “What’s it like watching Eric’s career take off when yours isn’t doing anything?"

“I wasn’t on birth control, but my periods have always been extremely accurate so I knew the exact three days I was ovulating. During one of those days right after our honeymoon, Eric wanted to be together,” Jessie writes. “As soon as I found out I was pregnant, Eric was excited and I was totally freaked out. … Up until that point I could be as selfish as I wanted. … With a baby that would all go away. It came as a big moment of shock.”
