Brian Hooker walked out of a Bahamian jail on April 13, 2026, without facing charges — but the case surrounding the disappearance of his wife, Lynette Hooker, is far from closed. The 59-year-old Michigan man remains a suspect in the investigation, and his own public statements, along with doubts raised by Lynette’s daughter, have kept the story squarely in the national spotlight.

Here is everything Brian has said about Lynette’s disappearance since it was first reported.

Brian Hooker’s Account of What Happened to Wife Lynette Hooker

According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Brian told authorities that he and Lynette, 55, took an 8-foot, “hard-bottom” dinghy from Hope Town to Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands on the evening of April 4, 2026.

“During the journey, his wife reportedly fell overboard with the boat keys, causing the vessel’s engine to shut off,” police said in a news release shared on April 5, 2026.

Brian reported that “strong currents” carried Lynette away until he could no longer see her, according to authorities. He then told police he paddled the dinghy to shore and eventually made it to the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard, located on Great Abaco Island, around 4 a.m. on April 5. That is when he was said to have reported his wife as missing.

Abaco police officers, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and Hope Town Fire & Rescue then launched a search for Lynette.

Brian Hooker Revealed Lynette’s Disappearance in a Facebook Post

On the morning of April 8, 2026, Brian shared a Facebook photo of himself and Lynette, accompanied by a caption in which he wrote, “I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Bahamas.”

“Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart. We continue to search for her and that is my sole focus,” Brian also wrote.

Brian Hooker’s Arrest and Detention

Later on the evening of April 8 — just three days after he reported Lynette missing — Brian was arrested in connection with her disappearance. The Royal Bahamas Police Force shared in a news release that he had been apprehended that evening. Brian was not mentioned by name in the release.

Advardo Dames, the assistant commissioner of the Royal Bahamas Police, confirmed to Reuters that Brian was arrested “for additional questioning based on some probable cause we have.”

Brian has denied any wrongdoing. He was released from custody on the night of April 13, 2026, five days after being detained.

What Brian Hooker Has Told Police

Brian’s attorney, Terrel Butler, said that police previously questioned Brian on April 10, 2026, for more than three hours, inquiring about whether he caused harm to Lynette. He was also asked to share details about his relationship with his wife and their personal life.

“He was uncertain as to why they were questioning him about causing harm or possible murder when they had not given him any information where she is, if they had recovered her,” Butler said on April 10, per NBC News.

Butler has maintained there is no evidence to connect Brian to Lynette’s disappearance, and Brian has maintained his innocence.

“He definitely denies causing her death, and he still asked about her and is hopeful that she will be recovered,” Butler said.

The decision to release Brian came after a meeting between police and prosecutors, according to Royal Bahamas Police Commissioner Shanta Knowles, who confirmed to NBC News that he will remain a suspect in the ongoing investigation.

“The decision to release the individual was made following consultation with the Department of Public Prosecutions, which recommended that no charges be filed at this time pending the outcome of further investigations,” the Royal Bahamas Police said in a press release on April 13.

Butler told reporters that authorities “had no evidence” against her client, so they were required to release him. Butler added that Brian was “very emotional” and needed time to “de-stress from this horrible experience.”

Brian Hooker Speaks Out After Jail Release

After his release, Hooker told CBS News on April 14, 2026, that he “won’t be able to stop looking” for Lynette. He added that “someone with more authority” will have to tell him to stop.

When asked if he believes Lynette is still alive, he said, “I want to.”

“I believe I’ve been told that people have lasted in the Bahamas after falling overboard for days and even weeks,” he said.

“There are so many islands, there are so many sandbars, little atolls and spits of land,” he added. “Of course you think about alternatives to that, but I’m not really capable of just turning away from this.”
He continued to discuss the situation while appearing on NBC News on April 14. “I said I’d never harm Lynette and I never would harm Lynette and I want to find Lynette,” he said while recalling being asked by police if he had hurt his wife.

Brian added that he believed police view him as a suspect due to the media attention surrounding the case. “It’s been 10 days, it’s been a long time, I don’t think I’ve ever been apart from her in 25 years for this long,” he said through tears.

Inside the Couple’s Sailing Life

The Hookers were known to be avid sailors. Brian told CBS News the pair had been sailing for more than 12 years and being together on the water was “fantastic.”

“We’re more like cocaptains,” he said. “There are certain jobs that I did, and certain jobs that she did, because there’s a big enough boat that it takes two people to really to run efficiently.”

Their boat, called Soulmate, is 46 feet long and has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. “She’s our floating home,” he said. “We’ve been on her for four years now.”

Brian and Lynette have been married for roughly 25 years, Lynette’s daughter Karli Aylesworth told CNN. The couple would regularly sail together and share their boating adventures online, their family members confirmed to the news outlet.

Lynette’s Daughter Raises Doubts

Aylesworth has publicly expressed doubts about her stepfather’s account following her mother’s disappearance.

“I hope this was just a freak accident, but I just have a hard time believing it at the moment,” Aylesworth said on April 9, per NBC News. “I just want to know the truth.”

“I feel like this was probably preplanned, if anything, like, it doesn’t seem like just some accident,” she said.

Aylesworth told CNN on April 9 that she just wants “to know the truth.”

“I don’t want him to be in trouble,” Aylesworth said of her stepfather. “I just hope this was a freak accident, but I don’t want it to just be swept under the rug.”

Butler responded by saying that Brian “categorically and unequivocally denies any wrongdoing and in particular the allegations recently made by Karli Aylesworth.” Butler added, “He has been cooperating with the relevant authorities as part of an ongoing investigation.”
